Ribeiro map, 1529 (portion) |
|
Diogo Ribeiro, a Portuguese, recorded new discoveries on the official Spanish map of the world. By 1529 Esteban Gomez and Giovanni da Verrazano had established that there was a continuous coastline between Florida and the Gulf of St Lawrence. Between C. del breton and C. rasso (Cape Race) Ribeiro located a broad bay, an indication, perhaps, that the existence of the Gulf of St Lawrence was known. To the north Ribeiro named Labrador and Greenland. |
