The Canadian Patriotic Fund was a voluntary organization which co-coordinated fund-raising and provided monthly grants to wives and dependents of soldiers. Widows and dependents received pensions from the fund until the federal government assumed that responsibility in 1916. While most contributions were voluntary, Alberta and New Brunswick used taxes to levy funds.
